How to order the right truck part using your VIN or chassis number

The same model can use different parts depending on year and engine. Sending the VIN or chassis number is the fastest way to get the right part first time.

Two trucks with the same model name can need different parts. Manufacturers change engines, brake systems and suppliers between production years, and sometimes in the middle of a year. Ordering by model name alone is the most common cause of wrong parts, return trips and extra days off the road.

What to send with a parts request

In order of usefulness:

  1. The old part number. If it is readable on the part or its box, this is the most direct way to identify the part and any newer replacement number.
  2. The VIN or chassis number. It identifies the model, year and factory build of the vehicle.
  3. The engine code or engine number. Needed for engine parts such as filters, gaskets, injectors and overhaul kits.
  4. A clear photo of the part. Useful when numbers are worn off. Include a photo of any label and of the part from two angles.

Where to find the VIN or chassis number

  • Vehicle registration card (Istimara): the chassis number is printed on the card. This is usually the quickest source for a fleet office.
  • Chassis plate: on most trucks, a plate on the door pillar or inside the cab.
  • Stamped on the frame: on many trucks the number is also stamped on the chassis rail, often near the front right wheel.

Where to find the engine code

Look for a plate or stamping on the engine block, or check the vehicle service book. Many fleet management systems also store the engine code against each vehicle.

Superseded part numbers

Manufacturers regularly replace part numbers with new ones when a part is improved or a supplier changes. An old number may no longer be listed, but a direct replacement usually exists. Our parts specialists check superseded numbers on every request, so you can send the number you have.

Keep a fleet parts list

For fleets with many vehicles of the same type, a simple spreadsheet saves time on every order. Record each vehicle’s plate number, chassis number, engine code and the part numbers you order most often, such as filters and brake pads. Send it to us once and we can match future requests in minutes.
